Between December 2014 and the end of May in 2018, Iran had the top ranking in Asia and the longest continuous period that any team has enjoyed this distinction.
On the continent, Iran has won three Asian Cup championships in 1968 1973, 1972 and 1976. The country's most impressive performance in the Olympics was when it reached the quarterfinals in 1996's Montreal Games. In the FIFA World Cup, Iran has qualified six times (1978 1998, 1998 2014, 2015, 2018 , and 2022) but have never advanced beyond the group stage; Iran have only won two games, with the United States in 1998 and Morocco in 2018.
